Telegraph Code, 1837. Inventor: Samuel F.B. Morse (U.S.) (1791-1872). The real credit belonged largely to his assistant, Alfred Vail (U.S.).

    Using the word scientist in today's parlance excludes most of the names above. For example Faraday was a self taught amateur physicist, a title all but extinct today. In fact today's scientists have a very poor invention record. This fact becomes even more distinct when we consider there are more scientists in the world today than ever before.
